Review for Broken Science Volume II by Pat Stealey
Sun, May. 18 2008
The Greens have done it again. Tuck and Yoke hit stride with their fifth CD, Broken Science Volume 2. With the trademarked balance of blues and rock, The Greens manage to maintain their signature sound, tossing the theme up in the air to be caught by whomever, wherever. Track 2, “She’s a Busy Girl”, follows our hero, a misunderstood student who just can’t seem to woo his love interest, only to be spurned by her family over and over again. Somehow, this misguided Romeo’s story seems not only funny, but regretful at the same time. Yoke trades in the crash for the hi-hat, bringing about the rat-a-tat-tat era of the album. Of course, The Greens aren’t satisfied with leaving their listeners with any clue as to what’s coming next. Track three, “Chinaski,” tosses a hat to Bukowski with an ode to his famous side character, Mr. Henry (Hank) Chinaski, a raging alcoholic and womanizer. Sound like a good time for a rock song to you? Yeah, me too! With distorted guitar chords and a cymbal-driven line, the song unregretfully gives poor Hank a bad case of the blue-faced blues. Once again, the mood switches from morbidly comical to purely nostalgic. “Oily Rag” yearns for the days of childhood summertimes, asking the question that high-schoolers and college students have been shouting for years (not unlike Andrew Tuck in the second chorus): “How did the outside world become so strange to us?” Sounds like time to light up our “Sad old lonely ways” and return to a better time. Keep listening, and you’ll be surprised to hear a nothing-short-of-absurd song about a shocking choice of undergarments. Yes, that’s right, “Thunderwear” tells of a dinner date with Captain Beefheart and his mustard escapades. Of course, we feel just as scared as the characters in the song, because somehow, (almost surprisingly) the song is fantastic. I wasn’t the only one awaiting the release of this CD, as much of the Parkersburg music army has gotten on the “band” wagon. The band’s previous albums (as well as this one) are available for purchase through Mr. Nathan Yoke, and at The Sound Exchange on Grand Central Avenue. After a hiatus, The Greens throw a whirling vortex of emotion and rhythm at their listeners via compact disc, as they once again make it just a little easier to drag ourselves through the days. ~Pat Stealey

Eric connected us to this web site for WV musicians- www.wv-music.com which seems to focus on bands, etc. from the central part of the state. Give it a look and see the possibilities it presents. posted by steve tuck
Greens report a good previous night at Gibbie's
Wed, Apr. 23 2008
The Greens seemed to make a new "band friend" with their opening act from the Pittsburgh (I think) area at Gibbie's Friday night. Both Andy and Danny told me about making a good connection with these guys. Look for further partnering to come of this. I'll have to re-visit the my space site of the Greens to recall their name- some kind of highway number reference!?!! (apologies in advance for my sloppy/ spontaneous post, without doing my research ahead of time) posted by steve tuck @ 11:12 AM
This Friday: Greens at Front Row
Wed, Apr. 23 2008
Monday, April 21, 2008 The Greens will be back in Parkersburg this weekend on Friday for a show at the Front Row. Coal Canary will be opening for the Greens (with presumably Andy playing his exuberant bass) and then the drummer will sit in with Ben and Andy (as Nate is unable to be there)- so this will recreate the good show up in Marietta from a few weeks ago. This will give folks a solid evening of music in diverse veins, so come on out. I'll be bringing my first early flyers for the Bob Dylan tribute show which will be at the Front Row in a month (May 24th). I have to tactfully promote it elsewhere than at the Wheel HOuse. posted by steve tuck
